This morning guards outside the Mines and Money conference in London tried to suppress Saami protests over mining on traditional Saami lands. Saami community representatives were told they were not permitted to protest and were forced away from the Conference centre. With the assisstance of Richard Solly from London Mining Network –  a partner organisation in London – the Saami delegation maintained that they were permitted to excerise their democratic right to public protest. After being forced away three times, the Saami delegation were finally able to continue their peaceful protest, outside the conference, without further interventions by the guards.

The Saami delegation are representing the Saami communities of Sirges, Jåhkågaska, Lainiovuoma, Saarivuoma, Laevas and Girjas and are protesting over mining plans by Australian backed Scandinavian Resources and British based Beowulf Mining.

Press Release -  Tuesday 6 December 2011

Today several Indigenous Saami communities from Scandinavia will attend the ‘Mines and Money’ London conference in order to raise awareness over the destruction of their traditional lands by mining.

Saami areas in Sweden are currently experiencing an explosion in mining developments by both Scandinavian and foreign companies. Ironically, while these companies commonly market themselves to investors based on principles of Corporate Social Responsibility, many of them risk breaching human rights conventions, because they all too often fail to see the connection between the impacts of their activities and Saami rights.

The Saami Council, the National Swedish Saami Association, and individual Saami communities are in dialogue with several mining companies and their investors, including Scandinavian Resources and Beowulf Mining, to name just two. “These companies claim to respect the rights of Indigenous peoples, yet they seem to have no problem with performing intrusive exploration and mining activities in sensitive Saami reindeer herding areas”, says Mattias Åhrén, Head of Human Rights, at the Saami Council.

Many Saami communities are at a crisis point. “Reindeer herding, and our Saami culture, simply cannot tolerate any more industrial activities. We have very little lands left and the last of them are being taken by private mining companies”, says Mats Berg, on behalf of the Saami delegation to London, representing the Saami communities of Girjas, Laevas, Sirges and Lainiovuoma.

Saami organisations are also critical of Sweden’s failure to protect Saami rights.  “Sweden’s mining legislation does not provide any protection of Saami rights and the Swedish government has been critiqued numerous times by the UN for its failure to take action”, says Jörgen Jonsson, Chairman of the National Swedish Saami Association.

The Saami communities will be available for media interviews in person between 8am and 11am on Tuesday 6th of December outside the Mines and Money conference at the Business Design Centre, 52 Upper St, London, N1 0QH. They will be recognisable by their traditional Saami dress.

Media Release – Friday 25 Nov 2011

Scandinavian Resources (SCR), a small, Perth based, ASX listed exploration company, was criticised today about its plans to open several mines in the middle of critical reindeer herding habitat in northern Sweden that is essential for the survival of Saami reindeer herding as a traditional indigenous livelihood.

“We are absolutely opposed to exploration and mining on our traditional lands and we will do everything we can to stop this short-term plundering of our mountains” says Ingemar Blind, Chairman of the affected Girjas Saami Community.

“We also know that other stakeholders in our region are of the same opinion and have grave concerns over the environmental damage mining will entail for our sensitive artic environment” says Tor-Erik Huuva, Chairman of the affected Laevas Saami community.

Members of Girjas and Laevas communities acted to ensure their voices were heard at the Annual General Meeting of Scandinavian Resources, which is trying to develop the mines through their subsidiary Kiruna Iron. Scandinavian Resources planned mining activities would violate fundamental human rights of the local Saami reindeer herders. Those backing Kiruna Iron also contribute to human rights violations.

Today the Saami Council has again written to Canaccord Genuity and Parety Securities – financial institutions mandated by SCR to raise financing for the mines – and advised them of the high environmental and social risks associated with the projects.

“Without the consent of local Saami communities, these projects are doomed to fail,” says Mattias Åhrén, Chief Lawyer at Saami Council. “It is also ironic that a company with backing from Australia – a country where indigenous rights are well recognised – would come to Sweden and ignore the Saami people’s right to say no to exploration and mining”.

The Saami communities are opposed to any further mining in their areas and are being assisted in their campaign by Saami organisations, such as Saami Council and the National Swedish Saami Association, and also Australian based Mineral Policy Institute.
